Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) focuses on learning skills to manage intense emotions, improve relationships, increase awareness and tolerate distress.
DBT is particularly helpful for those who experience difficulties regulating emotions that impact on their own wellbeing and their relationships with others
DBT comprises of four main pillars:
Connect - Interpersonal Effectiveness
Working on building healthy relationships by developing our capacity to communicate and set boundaries. It's how to ask for what you want and say "no" to what you don't, while keeping your relationships (and self-respect) intact.
Observe - Mindfulness
Being present and aware. Before we can change a behaviour, we must be able to see it clearly. It's focusing on the present moment and observing without judgement.
Regulate - Emotional Regulation
Learning how to understand what emotions are for and tolerating them It's naming emotions and recognising things like the difference between feelings and facts.
Engage - Distress Tolerance
Skills for when you can't change the situation, but you need to get through a difficult moment without making it worse.
